DASS returns to Turkey

In May 2010 the John Grieve Centre gave a lecturing input into the course organised by the Turkish Army NATO Centre of Excellence-Defence against Terrorism, Ankara. The course was 'Combating Terrorism" and the participants were police and military personnel from Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia UAE, Georgia, Switzerland and Serbia.

DASS and financial intelligence in Montenegro

In February 2010 DASS through the John Grieve Centre, gave a week of training for to police officers and financial regulators from Serbia and Montenegro. The course was held in Petrovac, Montenegro and was carried out under the auspices of the United Nations Development Programme.

DASS training to Jordanian authorities.

In January 2010 DASS, through the John Grieve Centre gave a training input with the NATO Centre of Excellence - Defence against Terrorism, Ankara. Dr Nick Ridley, together with academics from Sam Houston State University of Texas, Turkish universities and specialists form the Turkish Army delivered an anti terrorist training programme in Amman, Jordan.

The participants were representatives of the Jordanian Army and police, Algerian police and Azerbaijan army. Dr Nick Ridley gave training sessions on anti terrorist financing.

DASS again at University of Teramo

In October 2009 Nick Ridley gave a series of lectures on behalf of JGC
DASS to students on the International Master's course in Transnational
Financial Organised Crime at the University of Teramo Italy. The
lecturing sessions concerned financing of terrorism. The course intake
included students from Italy, Mexico, Iraq, Kosovo, and Canada.

JGC DASS and Community Policing Workshop

The John Grieve Centre gave a lecturing input into the Workshop on Community Impact Assessments at Chartridge Conference Centre, Bucks to participants from Thames Valley Police. The workshop was facilitated by the University of Cumbria, chaired by Professor John Grieve, with a lecture input from Dr Nick Ridley. Professor MacVean of Cumbria University provided an informative overview of Community Impacts and differing perceptions by law enforcement of the community. A keynote speech was given to all participants by the Chief Constable of Thames Valley, Sara Thornton.

DASS part of university delegation to the United Arab Emirates

The John Grieve Centre DASS formed part of the London Metropolitan University delegation in the United Arab Emirates 29 July to 5 June. Working visits and liaison talks were made with the principal higher education establishments and universities in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharajah, and with the Abu Dhabi Police regarding specialist courses and research.

DASS again to Turkey

The John Grieve Centre DASS was part of the lecturing team conducting the Turkish Army course, Legal Aspects in anti Terrorism, giving lectures on terrorist financing in February 2009 in Ankara (Turkey). The workshop was organised by the Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism.
  
The workshop was hosted by the Turkish Army, and had a wide range of students, including military representatives from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Senegal, Croatia Serbia, Austria, Germany, and Slovakia. A keynote address was given by Professor Ozen from the Faculty of Political Science Istanbul University.

DASS returns to Turkey - anti terrorist financing

The John Grieve Centre DASS was part of the lecturing team conducting the Turkish Police Financing of Terrorism Workshop between 19 to 25 Janaury 2009 
in Ankara (Turkey). The workshop was organised by the Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism.
  
The workshop was hosted by the Turkish police, attended by police officers and armed forces from Turkey and, law enforcement and academics from the NATO, UK, Canada, Gulf countries, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, and Macedonia.

DASS and Understanding Islam

On 8-10 December 2008 the John Grieve Centre delivered at the annual UNDERSTANDING ISLAM international symposium held at the UK Cranfield Defence Academy.
The participants were representatives of differing religions, UK social services ,UK law enforcement and study groups for social integration. The speakers covered topics such as the question of Sharia law within the British legal system, Islamic societal integration, potential alienation of differing social groups within the UK, and radicalisation and potential terrorism. Dr Nick Ridley of the John Grieve Centre DASS delivered a paper on the economic factors and financing of terrorism.

DASS on terrorist financing in Switzerland




In late November 2008 Dr Nick Ridley of the John Grieve Centre DASS attended a closed international symposium on the financing of terrorism in Berne Switzerland. The event was organised by ISSN Foundation Zurich and was part of the ongoing Airey Neave Trust events in anti terrorist financing. Representatives were present from foreign embassies in Berne, international law enforcement, international and Swiss banking institutions. Dr Ridley was part of a panel of experts holding a plenary session on international ant terrorist co-operation.

DASS and John Grieve Centre join forces for Jane’s Police Review Gala Awards
 


gala awardsDASS and John Grieve Centre staff joined the Home Secretary, senior officers and dignitaries from forces across the UK at the annual Jane's Police Review Gala Awards, which took place on 13th November 2008 at the Royal Horticultural Halls in London. 

The Awards, begun in 1992, have established themselves as the most prestigious event for recognising and rewarding excellence in community policing in the United Kingdom.


The John Grieve Centre for Policing & Community Safety, which delivers crime related courses as well as a professional doctorate in ‘Policing, Security and Community Safety’, together with DASS, sponsored the  ‘Student Police officer of the Year’ award.  This year’s winner was PC Kevin Hailes, based in Hertfordshire, who was nominated by his force because of his impressive arrest record and for being an excellent communicator.


Other awards, which were all presented by Hon Jacqui Smith MP, Home Secretary also included Community Police Officer of the Year, Diversity Team in Action Award, Community Support Officer of the Year and Lifetime Achievement in Policing Award. Nominees were put forward by constabularies across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland (including British Transport Police and MoD Police). 

DASS was represented by Prof John Gabriel, Dr Ian Waters, Prof Liz Kelly and Monika Pilatowska. The Department was also pleased to have Debbie Townsend and Stephen Kavanagh as guests at the event.

Monika Pilatowska, Conference, Seminar & Training Organiser at the John Grieve Centre commented, “It was great to hear about the achievements of police officers and their levels of commitment to the job which are astounding”.



The evening, hosted by BBC News Presenter Huw Edwards, attracted attendance of the most senior and influential figures in policing and government. Guests this year included Sir Ian Blair, Commissioner, Metropolitan Police Service; and Chief Officers from 46 forces, award nominees as well as local community groups.

DASS returns to Teramo, Italy

On 31 October 2008 the John Grieve Centre DASS delivered teaching on the module of Evaluation of Counter Measures against Organised Crime at the University of Teramo in Italy. This module was part of the International Master's Course of Law and Criminology in Transnational and Financial Organised Crime.
The students were from Italian law enforcement, Italian universities, and from Romania, Kosovo and Ukraine.

DASS and the British Bankers

In October 2008 Dr Nick Ridley of the John Grieve Centre was part of a team teaching giving specialist training, organised by the British Bankers Association in London, to representatives from UK banks and financial institutions in a one day training course in anti terrorist financing.

JGC lectures at Teramo University, Italy

In late May 2008 Dr Nick Ridley of the John Grieve Centre gave a series of lectures on terrorism and terrorist financing to students at University of Teramo Italy. The course was the International Master's Degree on Transnational Organised and Financial Crime of the University of Teramo. The participants included individuals from Italy, Ukraine, Kosovo, and Romania.

The John Grieve Centre, in conjunction with the Research and Intelligence Suport Centre (RISC), held a one day training session "Effective MAPPA" on 15th November 2007. The course, which took place at Wyboston Lakes in Bedfordshire, was designed to introduce new concepts for dealing with "MAPPA", the Multi Agency Public Protection Arrangements, which aim to provide a framework for the assessment and management of the most serious sexual and violent offenders. Presentations were given by Prof John Grieve and Dr Nick Ridley from the John Grieve Centre as well as by serving Police officers and members of RISC. The day also included syndicate exercises designed to give practicioners awareness of new approaches to MAPPA. Over 60 people attended this successful event.

Dr Nick Ridley
on behalf of the JGC attended a conference "Motivation For Suicide
Bombers Advanced Research Workshop" which was conducted between 24-25 May
2007 in Ankara (Turkey) by the Centre of Excellence Defence Against Terrorism.
  
The conference was hosted by the Turkish army, attended by armed forces, law
enforcement and academics from the UN NATO, UK, USA, Middle Eastern countries,
Russia, Romania, Bulgaria and Macedonia and central Asian countries.

The subjects included:
- operational aspects of suicide bomb attacks
- the exchange of intelligence by security services and law enforcement
- the changing role of women in suicide terrorism
- the psychological profiling of suicide terrorism
